Haiku as Healing Practice

Haiku as Healing Practice

When we are living through illness, grief, uncertainty, trauma, or change, the mind can become crowded with fear. Sometimes we need a simple practice that gives the nervous system somewhere gentle to land.

Writing haiku can become a quiet way to cope. It gives the mind a small container, the heart a doorway, and the spirit a place to breathe. We do not have to explain everything. We do not have to tell the whole story. We only have to notice one image, one feeling, one moment of truth.

Haiku can help us distract ourselves from pain without denying it. It can help us excavate our inner creativity when survival has buried our voice. It can help us turn what we have endured into something small, beautiful, and complete.

A haiku is a short poem traditionally written in three lines with 17 syllables total:

Line 1: 5 syllables
Line 2: 7 syllables
Line 3: 5 syllables

It often captures a moment in nature, a feeling, a season, or a quiet truth. The beauty of haiku is that it does not need to say everything. It simply opens a window.

Example

I walked through sickness
Carrying light in my bones
Still, my soul remained

Pain became teacher
Not because I welcomed it
But because I grew

My breath disappeared
Then returned like morning rain
Softly, I came back

The mirror saw wounds
But Spirit saw survival
Blooming underneath

Sickness filled the room
My nervous system trembled
Still, I chose to live

My skin spoke for me
When no one else understood
The body knows truth

I lost many homes
Searching for clean air and peace
My soul stayed with me

Cancer, fear, and grief
Could not bury my bright flame
I am still rising

From diagnosis
To prayer inside my body
Healing found a path

I survived the night
Not by strength alone, but grace
Held me until dawn

What tried to break me
Became compost for wisdom
Now my roots go deep
