Summer is here in the Northern Hemisphere, and many of us are heading out into the sunshine in search of recreation, adventure, and a little joy.
One of America’s most beloved summertime adventures was driving Route 66—the legendary highway that stretched from Chicago to Santa Monica. Often called the “Main Street of America,” Route 66 carried generations of travelers through small towns, deserts, roadside diners, neon motels, and wide-open landscapes. It came to symbolize freedom, discovery, and the excitement of seeing what might be waiting just beyond the next bend.
Whatever adventures you are planning this summer, I hope they bring you great joy.
I have a little fascination—perhaps even a fetish of sorts—for photographing personalized license plates. I am always looking for signs, words, and symbols that inspire me, make me smile, or encourage me to keep moving forward toward greater joy.
Here are a few from my collection.
And I assure you: no automobiles were damaged during the photography process.
